Nearly all of our libraries provide advanced technology that levels the playing field for international and ESL patrons, as well as those with learning disabilities or physical challenges… or at least they have the potential to, if students, faculty and staff know about the tools at their disposal. Lydia will highlight translation and accessibility tools embedded in common e-resources, with suggestions on how to design liaison relationships to promote them to International Services, ESL, tutoring, and other relevant departments. Experience at the Brennan Library has shown that stakeholders who stand to benefit tremendously from this technology never knew it was available and are thrilled when they discover it. This leads to increased student success, engagement and retention of at-risk students.

Mango Languages has over 70 foreign languages and 17 ESL courses offered, including a platform for language learning through full-length feature films. Usable by a multitude of departments and student groups, Mango has mobile apps for learning on the go. Meagan will introduce and discuss the Mango Student Ambassador program, which allows students to gain marketing experience by promoting the resource across campus, introducing it to groups that didn’t know it was available. The Brennan Library is piloting the Ambassador program through a partnership with the college’s International Services Department. The session will highlight relevant courses that make language learning more appealing to otherwise uninterested groups, from Medical and Legal Spanish, to texting for ESL Spanish.
