The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library struggles, as do all libraries, on how to acquire the best books users need in the format users want and that fit the resources at hand. Technology advances have provided for streamlined ways to acquire materials. However, the huge variation in monograph purchase options combined with the many variables libraries face in purchasing eBooks has greatly complicated the acquisitions landscape. Combine that with ever-eroding monograph funds with changes in staffing and the publishing world and the result can be problematic.
This session's objective is to show how to break down options in purchasing to then bring them back to a whole view of the process. It traces the evolution of monograph purchasing at the Library and how several pilot programs, in-depth data analysis, user surveys and vendor plans enabled us to put together several seemingly independent pieces into a more comprehensive book buying plan. It includes perspectives from four staff members with different roles in library purchasing. Time will be left for questions and the audience will get tips on data sharing and cross unit collaboration.
