Librarians serve as the researcher’s guide, helping those who seek knowledge navigate through the tangled mass of the literature search and setting them on the path to discovery and insight. But current search workflows stifle our ability to guide researchers to the necessary sources, especially the critical comprehensive and contextual knowledge from books. Every decision that librarians, publishers, and vendors make can expand or limit the paths a researcher can take, so how can we be sure we have the most complete picture of researchers’ needs in order to make the right decisions? Without the right data, how can we be sure researchers are getting the right information? In this session librarians and a researcher will discuss their impressions of a new initiative from Elsevier, ScienceDirect Topics. Topics is an enhancement that helps patrons make the connections they need for speedy discovery of high-quality information. It anticipates relevant key topics that act as bridges between journal articles and credible interdisciplinary contextual literature. We will also share data on researcher behavior so you can curate your knowledge base to fill in the connective gaps your patrons need and guide them on a better path to discovery. We will have panel of librarians discussing their views on how ScienceDirect Topics expand their users understanding and reveal the vital, but often hidden, contextual sources necessary to foster learning. A researcher will give an end user’s feedback on this new type of resource.
